Eric Hayot’s Humanist Reason: A Tautegory Exchange

Featuring responses by Marshall Brown, Sheila Liming, Andries Hiskes, Jeffrey J. Williams & Eric Hayot. [December 2022]

The opinions expressed in this blog are those of the contributors. They do not purport to reflect the view of the Tautegory Project. If you would like to contribute to the blog on a subject germane to the interests and aspirations of the project please email us here.

The Blog is intended to provide a means for communication on specific topics or problems that engage or intersect with ongoing conversations and events, including writing with a prospective intent, to raise a question or present an argument to which others may respond. This is not meant to be a casual collection of opinions, but will be curated: particularly in times of extreme stress (such as the present moment), there is even less reason to suppose that an opinion is of value simply because it is one’s own.  We are looking for writing that can be plausibly rendered in concrete practical terms.

One overriding issue in the present climate is that academic institutions, particularly those with which we may have personal attachments, are notoriously subject to department or program meetings where discussions on such matters as hiring priorities or curricula are literally impossible to carry out to specific practical proposals. It is our hope that, among other things, the Tautegory Blog will allow for postings that can be discussed in a smaller group, or become a focus for a reading group or symposium, where the problems with suggestions that raise immediate and excitable responses can be considered in detail.

More generally, this Blog allows for a kind of safe pre-publication, in the sense of introducing an idea that is still in process, and may even be more than a little raw.  Throughout our planning of this project, we have been consistently mindful of the importance, and the potential fragility, of meaningful conversation, particularly in this domain
